CAEL intends to develop a green energy facility in Central Jamaica that produces electricity from wind turbine equipment. This electricity producing facility will supply its total output of low costing energy to the local grid for onward distribution to the wider population of the island. As CAEL seeks to promote expanded use of “green energy” as an alternative source to conventional energy approaches it has approached a leading wind turbine manufacturer regarding the supply of equipment for installation on the island.
The objectives of CAEL through its proposed wind farm are:
- Increased direct and indirect employment through the development of a renewable energy producing plant in Central Jamaica.
- Positive contribution to the Jamaica’s Revenue through the remittance of statutory obligations.
- Effect the transfer of technology to members of the workforce in Jamaica thereby developing a cadre of local experts with medium to large wind turbine operations.
- Energy security.
- Positive contribution to the diversification of the nation’s energy mix.
- Meeting the Government of Jamaica’s energy targets for reduced reliance on fossil fuel sources to supply its electricity needs.
- Tangible and affirmative action from Jamaica as the country is a signatory of the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), regarding the reduction of greenhouse gases.
- Foreign exchange earnings from the trading of carbon credits.
- Continued use of environmentally friendly idle/mining land.
